Erik Allardt Has Passed Away

It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we announce the recent passing away of Professor
Erik Allardt. In 1958, Allardt (b. 1925) became Professor of Sociology at the University of Helsinki.
He was also a Research Professor at the Academy of Finland for ten years, and from 1992-94 he
served as Chancellor of the Åbo Akademi University. Allardt was one of the most prominent social
scientists in Finland and the Nordic countries. His research in the areas of welfare, political sociology,
and linguistic minorities was widely recognized as advancing the international research frontier. Not
least, he broadened the perspective on welfare and demonstrated the value of comparative research.
Allardt was also highly valued for nurturing and leveraging research at an international level. The Erik
Allardt Fellowship Programme, initiated by Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS) and the
Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS), was created in this spirit, and with the purpose to
further and strengthen academic and cultural exchanges between Sweden and Finland within a context
of high-quality research in the social and human sciences. SCAS welcomed its first Erik Allardt Fellows
in residence in the academic year 2009-10. The programme is funded by Stiftelsen Riksbankens Jubileums-
fond.
